Program
Festival opening
steirischer herbst ’23 opens with a performance by Lulu Obermayer on Schloßberg. On the first weekend, performances by Mateja Bučar, Adrienn Hód / HODWORKS, Michael Portnoy, and Giacomo Veronesi await the audience—all of which are new commissions.
Humans and Demons
Festival opening
21.9.
The opening days of this year’s steirischer herbst begin at the highest point of Graz, the Schloßberg, and create an imaginary topography of the city. Ceremonies continue with headline performances, discussions, and exhibition openings. Come to Graz to be part of the festivities!
Performances
Major new commissions of performances punctuated the opening days and continued throughout the festival. They ventured into different gray zones, negotiating and exploring troubling ambivalences past and present.
Exhibitions
Demon Radio
Up in the hills of Graz lies a derelict call center of a mobile phone provider. We imagined it as the premises of Demon Radio, haunted by one of our characters, the ominous and charismatic Dr. Jazz.

Villa Perpetuum Mobile
Especially after its renovation in the 1990s, Forum Stadtpark resembles a modernist villa, an incongruous, maybe even utopian home for dissenters. For steirischer herbst ’23, it became the residence of a dissident’s dissident, the physicist, poet, and erstwhile mental patient Stefan Marinov.

Church of Ruined Modernity
Beginning in the 1960s, the Minoritenkloster became a place of encounters between religion and modern art. One of the artists featured early on was Mira Schendel. She had visited Graz before during the war on a risky journey. Inspired by her phantom presence, the monastery became a Church of Ruined Modernity—representing the continent she left behind.

Submarine Frieda
Historically, Gries was the lowest part of Graz, which made it prone to flooding. In the world of Humans and Demons, it was buried under layers of waters of the past. At its heart lay the time capsule of Submarine Frieda. But who is Frieda? An accidental, fictitious heroine.

Ideas
This year’s Ideas program encompassed talks with the artists of Humans and Demons, discussions examining the festival’s themes from a philosophical or theoretical perspective, as well literary and curatorial events dealing with the urgent questions of our time.
herbst cabaret
For the second year in a row, steirischer herbst turned to cabaret and its capacity for gritty, gutsy social criticism. Six performances presented a mix of burlesque, street chanson, stand-up, and macabre poetry in the intimate setting of Forum Stadtpark’s basement.

ORF musikprotokoll
interconnected | interdependent
5.10.–8.10.
The recent burst of crises calls into question our individualism, which has been driven to extremes by neoliberalism. ORF musikprotokoll invited us to consider our surrounding environment as a dynamic network of relationships that today, perhaps more than ever, needs conscious shaping.

Out of Joint
Wer gegen wen?
10.10.–13.10.
Hamlet says: “The time is out of joint,” and he is right: time is still out of joint. Following an idea by German publicist, author, and moderator Roger Willemsen, this year’s edition of the literary festival Out of Joint also took a look at the present from the future. Hamlet changed his question. Now it was no longer: To be or not to be? But rather: Who against whom?
