In their newly commissioned theater project, Theater im Bahnhof explores what democracy might mean in an age of the notion’s exhaustion and apparent collapse. Its final gala performance presents the results of an ongoing series of multicourse dinners for audiences chosen at random—in accordance with the practice of ancient citizen lotteries. Inspired by Belgian sociologist David Van Reybrouckʼs compelling arguments against elections, their project explores the radical participatory alternatives for a new municipal politics.
Theater im Bahnhof (founded 1989, Graz) is a contemporary people’s theater. Its focus is on researching and writing its own productions for both the stage and public space, questioning Austrian identity between popular culture and tradition. The group is well known for their local engagement in Graz for over thirty years as well as their international performances at festivals such as Theater der Welt, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels, and Impulse Theater Festival, Düsseldorf/Cologne/Mülheim.
