Anton Kats

The Cemetery of Melodies Alive (2023)

Anton Kats’s newly commissioned work is a meditation on early musical memories. The soundtrackʼs associative, poetic narrative draws on past-life recollections of war and music heard during a childhood in Kherson, in a neighborhood inundated after the Kakhovka Dam was blown up by Russian troops and threatened by a possible sabotage of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant not far upwind. Kats’s central musical reference is Weather Report’s “Palladium,” a piece with cult status in the USSR, eponymous with the chemical element that one day might make cold fusion possible.

Anton Kats (1983, Kherson, Ukraine) is an artist and musician. His practice draws upon the everyday and is motivated by questions of agency and intentionality. Augmenting art through sound, music, performance, radio, and research, Kats develops responsive and site-specific projects exploring the interdependencies of learning, migration, and the nonnormative. His work has recently been shown at Galerie Wedding, Berlin; Savvy Contemporary, Berlin; Serpentine Galleries, London; and Tate Modern, London. Kats took part in Documenta 14, Kassel and Athens; the 10th Berlin Biennale; and the 4th Kochi-Muziris Biennale. He lives in Berlin.
