The Frieda Postcard

The character Frieda emerged when peace activists of the Bund der Kriegsdienstgegner (Alliance of Conscientious Objectors) in Graz altered a postcard of an anti-rearmament demonstration held on 30 August 1925, fearing persecution by the Nazi authorities. The parade’s cars and flowers now appeared to celebrate a generic woman named Frieda. The most prominent character in the picture is Emilie Salzmann (aka Emilie Suttner), an activist and later resistance fighter who organized many anti-militaristic protests. Here, this photo is presented in an aquatic setting, as an element of Submarine Frieda’s underwater world.
